OrganisingUNITE members at C&G say thanks to the branch for the funds we supplied for UNITE merchandise. They now have UNITE mugs in all C&G kitchens and are distributing the lanyards and pass holders as well as wearing UNITE t shirts to raise the profile of UNITE.
UNITE at C&G is working hard to organise a separate group within C&G called C&G Kineo with aim of increasing membership levels and seeking recognition to negotiate on pay. 23 new UNITE members recruited in last 2 weeks! Here is a copy of the letter we've been sending to colleagues at Kineo
Pay Claim
UNITE at C&G are currently preparing this year’s pay claim and are looking at requesting a £2000 across the board increase for all staff as well as the London Living Wage for cleaning and security contractors, and apprentices.
Success!
A member had been paid an allowance in addition to their salary for 7 years. The out of hours work that was the reason the allowance was paid had ceased some years ago but the allowance was continued to be paid. City & Guilds wanted to remove the allowance (resulting in a £2500 pa pay cut for the member) but UNITE successfully argued that it was an implied term of contract. They had to take out a grievance but it was upheld and the allowance will now be consolidated into the member’s salary.
Another member had 3 months unpaid maternity leave and asked to make up the missed pension contributions from that period (as well as for the employer contributions to be paid), even though C&G policies said that this could not happen. UNITE argued that it would be maternity discrimination for the contributions not to be paid and they are now amending the rules of the pension scheme to allow this to happen.
And currently UNITE is dealing with a case of a 65 year old member who has been on company sick pay for 6 months. After this point, C&G has a group income protection policy that pays 55% of salary if you are still unable to work. C&G said that the policy doesn’t cover you if you are over 65, so UNITE are arguing that this is age discrimination – ‘we haven’t won this one yet, but we’ll keep you posted!
